During the colder months, children will be asked to come into school in their PE kits, with shorts underneath jogging bottoms and hoodies over PE t-shirts .
A FEW OTHER REMINDERS...
Please can we ask that ALL school uniform/PE uniform is clearly labelled with your child's name.
Children can bring in a named bottle of water which they have access to throughout the day.
Children DO NOT need to bring in a snack as we provide a healthy snack for their morning break.
Please ensure your child comes into school each day with a book bag (please no rucksacks) and please make sure they bring their reading book and diary each day.
Homework
In Key Stage 1, we set homework each week via Google Classrooms.
Homework will be set on a Friday and your child will have until the following Friday to hand their homework in via Google Classrooms.
Reading at Home
Reading books will be given to children every Friday, and they will have the week to read to grown-up at home. We ask that you sign their reading diary when you hear your child read.
Reading books must be brought back on Fridays to be changed for a new one. Our school reading books must be returned before a new one can be given out.
We ask that reading books are kept safely in the plastic wallets provided by school when they are not being read to prevent any damage or getting lost.
Any damage or lost books will result in being asked for a charge to cover the cost of a replacement.
Every Friday, children will also take home a book from our 'Lending Library' each week as part of Reading for Pleasure which we encourage you to read together.
Please share picture books and stories with children at home.
Google Classroom
Google Classroom is where we post regular updates and reminders regarding the Year 1 classes. We post our homework on Google Classroom and send reminders about reading book changes.
CURRICULUM
Autumn Term
In the Autumn Term we have lots of exciting activities planned. In English, we will be using a range of texts including Superworm, Sulwe and The Jolly Postman. In Maths, we will begin the term by focusing on our number understanding in particular place value, addition and subtraction. Later on in the term we will be learning about the United Kingdom and comparing and contrasting the different human and physical features in each country! In History, we will be comparing our typical school day to a typical school day in Victorian times. In Art, we will be looking at the artist Paul Klee and the work he created. In Science, we will be investigating materials and our senses. These are just a few of the areas we will be learning about.
Spring Term
In Science, our main focus will be to identify, name and compare animals by learning about their structure, diet and habitats - and this will be reflected in our other subject areas as well. We will be looking at our Earth - on a globe and world maps-to identify and name the continents, oceans and hot and cold areas. We will also be finding facts about penguins for our non-fiction unit in English. In Art we will be looking at animal markings and patterns and how they are suited to the habitat and environment they live in, exploring colour mixing to draw and show these patterns. We will make animal hand puppets in DT using textile skills including sewing. In Maths, we will continue to work on our problem-solving using addition, subtraction, and measurement
Summer Term
In Summer, we look at Maths topics like time, multiplication, division and fractions. In English, we read some classic stories like Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, and our favourite Jilly Murphy stories - 5 Minutes Peace and Peace at Last. We look at life in Shanghai in Geography, and delve in Paper Sculptures in Art inspired by Samantha Stephenson. We look at Plants in Science and learn about famous Explorers in History. We will also make Windmills that spin in DT! This is just a small snippet of what is to come in the summer term, not including the exciting fun Year 1 school trip and fun school events like Sports Day and World Music Day!
