Wellbeing

Welcome to our Wellbeing Information page for parents and carers.

Below you will find more information about how we nurture wellbeing and educate on mental health matters throughout the school, as well as some resources you might find useful for your child or yourself.

Your children come to school to learn; learn new academic skills, learn to be responsible citizens, learn to expand their interests, learn to be good friends to others, learn to respect diversity and uniqueness...the list is almost endless and we take pride in the wide and creative range of learning opportunities that we provide through our curriculum, assemblies, enrichment days and extra-curricular activities.

But it does not stop there.

In order to ensure this learning can take place, we aim to make sure that nothing hinders your child's ability or desire to learn, and this means that we are completely invested in nurturing and promoting their wellbeing at all times.

The theme of wellbeing and positive mental health runs throughout our school curriculum, particularly in our Life Lessons which include health education, our whole-school and class assemblies, awareness days, fundraisers and enrichment opportunities.

We want to assure all parents and carers that your child's wellbeing truly is at the heart of all that we do and we are continually learning to improve our ways of monitoring their wellbeing and supporting children whenever and wherever they may need it. We have two dedicated Learning Mentors (Miss Williams and Mrs Brand), a Health Education Lead (Mrs Sinnott), a dedicated lead governor invested in positive mental health (Mrs McDermott) and a quality team of teaching staff and support staff that undertake regular training and share best practice to support the wellbeing of the children in their care.

We support wellbeing across three tiers:

  • Tier 1 - school-wide support - all children receive comprehensive, age-appropriate teaching around mental health and wellbeing and take part in regular Wellbeing Wednesday, awareness days and assemblies, including some external visitors when required, to enhance their learning and development
  • Tier 2 - additional support - children identified as struggling a little more with their life experiences or situations that could negatively affect their mental health and wellbeing are given additional support by class teachers and TAs, our wonderful learning mentors and may be invited to one of our Nurture Groups or Birkdale Buddies. We will also work closely with the parents of these children.
  • Tier 3 -  targeted support - children with SEMH (social, emotional and mental health needs) or other SEND needs may have targeted intervention and support from our SEND Lead Mrs Grice and external agencies. Parents of these children will play a big part in this support.

If you ever have any concerns about your child's wellbeing, or the wellbeing of another child, please contact your child's class teacher or our school office if you need to speak directly to our learning mentors, Mr Sheeran or Mrs Sinnott. Please do also contact us in absolute confidence if you need any support with your own wellbeing or the wellbeing of another adult in your child's life. We will do everything we can to support you and your family.
