Design Technology

Welcome to our Design and Technology Page

Our school's mission statement:
Attainment through caring, challenge and creativity

Why is Design and Technology so important ... so many reasons!

“New technology is common, new thinking is rare.” – Sir Peter Blake

"You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have."   Maya Angelou, author, poet, civil rights activist

"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." -- Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, Inc.

At Birkdale Primary, we believe that;

Design Technology is the purposeful use of knowledge, skills and physical resources to create products that meet a perceived need. Design Technology is part of every child's immediate experience. It is important that children are not only aware of what Design Technology is, but also develop a practical approach to it.

The curriculum involves every child in meaningful activities, which allow pupils to design and make. The process involves analysis, problem solving, practical capability and evaluation skills which are all transferable. Throughout school, children are encouraged and led through the designing, making and evaluating process which suits their natural enquiring minds with which they enter school.

We dedicate a week of each term to the teaching of DT. This enables the children to design, make and evaluate their products in a more immersive way; without the loss of momentum that comes from weekly sessions spaced out over a longer period.

In each year, from Nursery to Year 6, the children will learn about aspects of DT through activities that promote the use of practical skills and thinking, but also develop their independence. Every year group will experience cooking and textiles as they move through the school, ensuring a deeper progression of skills, as well as alternating between structures and mechanics each year.

In DT, our expectations are that each child is given the opportunity to explore a variety of skills and knowledge in order to become confident and independent designers who can articulate and value their own place in society as well as making a difference within it, through knowledge of the past and a vision for the future.

Our ambassador for Design and Technology is ...

Pupil Voice

Coming soon ...what do pupils in our school think about Design and Technology.

In R2, we have been studying minibeasts and their habitats. As part of our Home/School links,the children were given a design sheet to take home. They were asked to name a minibeast they wanted to make and then to draw up a list of resources they would need, illustrate their chosen creature and make it. These are their creations - aren't they fabulous!
