Science
Welcome to
Science
at Birkdale Primary School
Science is a core subject within the New National Curriculum.
The aims of the subject are to ensure that all pupils:
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
- develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer specific questions about the world around them
- are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
In order for these aims to be achieved, science is organised into programmes of study.
The content and demands of the programmes increase as the children progress through school, consequently, a variety of different teaching methods and approaches are used so as to be appropriate for the specific age ranges and so as to meet the needs of the children. Teaching sessions may take the format of:
- direct teaching
- small group activities
- individual activities
- illustrative and investigative activities
- outside visitors and agencies invited to school
